Jenny and Bruce have farming roots in eastern Massachusetts, and we stay connected by delivering a portion of the farm’s CSA shares to the eastern Mass suburbs. Our pre-boxed share contains about nine to twelve different items each week, and comes in a ¾ bushel reusable waxed box. Picadilly shares are designed for one household, and feed 2-4 people on average. The entire share is grown on our family farm, and is certified organic. The harvest changes as the season progresses, from tender spring greens, sweet strawberries and crisp carrots; to mouth-watering summer melons and tomatoes; to crisp autumn broccoli and sweet roots and squash. We take special attention in our planning to grow an abundance of the “basics” all season long, with a well-varied smattering of less common crops. Though the New England harvest season typically rises to a brilliant crescendo in the late summer and fall, we plant our fields with a view toward a steady season-long harvest, and a consistent share size, all season long.
On the day before share pick-up days, we email a weekly newsletter to shareholders, listing and describing what is in the share. We include farm news, recipes, and ideas for using the less common veggies in the share.
Though the farm is about two hours from the Boston area, we do invite all shareholders to visit the farm, enjoy the Pick-Your-Own garden, and to join us for farm potlucks and harvest days. Just watch the weekly newsletters for details. Eastern Massachusetts shareholders are always welcome to harvest extra when they do visit the farm.
All of this adds up to a pretty lovely share of the harvest, and we hope you’ll join us! Shareholders support every aspect of operating our farm – from paying a living wage, to caring for the soil with the long view in mind, to growing our food with organic and other best practices. Thank you!
FULL SEASON PRODUCE SHARE, 23 weeks, $735.
EGG SHARES are available again from Wingate Farm! Susie and Olivia are our neighbors to the southwest, just a stone’s throw through the woods from Picadilly. They raise hens on pasture and certified organic grain, in mobile coops. These hens live under the sun and the rain, they eat bugs, and they roost high on the perches in their coop. The egg yolks are deep orange and nutritious. Though the price of $4 per half dozen eggs is high compared to factory farmed eggs, the cost reflects the hard work involved to raise humanely-cared-for, pasture-raised hens, a rarity in modern agriculture. Find out more about Wingate Farm here.
PICADILLY FARM EXTENDED SEASON produce shares are available at several of our regular season pick up sites - North Reading, Bedford and Newton. The share includes a large bushel+ box of our certified organic produce, once in November the week before Thanksgiving, and once in the third week of December. The delivery day will likely be a Wednesday, November 15 and December 13, though we will pay attention to the weather for safe traveling those days. We’ll plan for a share that includes a wide range of our storage crops (like carrots, beets, parsnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, various other roots, winter squash, cabbage and garlic), as well as fresh harvested crops from our field and unheated hoop houses (like kale, collards, lettuce, spinach, leeks, radishes and other greens). The cost to add on both boxes (Nov and Dec) is $95 total.
SHARED HARVEST CSA. Picadilly Farm also participates in an extended winter season multi-farm CSA called Shared Harvest, with distributions in Arlington, Canton, Jamaica Plain, Buzzards Bay and Hingham. Find more information about Shared Harvest CSA, and to sign up for this share, click here.
